Deworming Services for Pets

Deworming your pet should be a routine practice in their medical journey. It involves oral or injectable medication that turns your pet’s immune system into a toxic environment for parasites. Your pet should go through a series of deworming when they are 2, 4, 6 and 8-weeks-old.This ensures the medication is effective and functioning as powerfully as possible. The sooner you get your pet started on the deworming process, the easier it will be to keep them safe from infections. Call us at 902.794.7387 to book your appointment.

How does the deworming medication work in my pet’s body?

Deworming medication kills the worms that exist in a puppy or kitten’s body. When they are young, they can contract worms through their mother’s milk. This is why deworming is a repetitive process. When the worms are killed, they pass through your pet’s body through their feces. The worms may not always be visible but the fecal matter must always be handled delicately to avoid spreading. Pick up after your pet immediately and wear gloves to keep their droppings contained and away from other animals. Deworming works on all kinds of worms, including heartworms, which live in your pet’s bloodstream. During the deworming process, discourage activity that gets your pet’s heart pumping. This can cause the heartworms to circulate through their body and potentially lead to blockage as they break apart and die.

What happens after the first set of deworming medication?

After the first series of medication, your pet’s immune system should be strong enough to kill worms that try to infiltrate their body. However, they must continue to be protected. We can ensure their safety by creating a parasite prevention plan. There is medication you can purchase at pet pharmacies to administer to your pet topically or orally. Speak with your veterinarian before making any purchases. They will be able to direct you to the best products suitable for your pet.
